What does it look like to lead with heart in high-performance environments—and still drive results?

In the premiere episode of The Joy CEO Podcast, I sat down with someone who’s embodied this balance for over a decade: Justin Honaman, Head of Worldwide Retail at Amazon and one of my earliest managers at Coca-Cola. This episode isn’t just a trip down memory lane. It’s a real-time masterclass in resilient leadership, creative thinking, and the power of relationships to shape a meaningful, joyful career.

Whether you’re navigating a demanding role, leading through change, or ready to make your next big career move, here are the key lessons from our conversation that will help you grow your impact and your well-being—at the same time.

1. Great Leaders Prioritize Grace Over Grind

One of the most pivotal moments in my early career was losing my mother—and having a manager who led me through that season with humanity and flexibility. Justin reminded us that “family first” isn’t a cliché—it’s a leadership imperative.

“You just let me know what you need. I’ve got your meetings. Take the time,” he said.

If you’re in a position of power, remember: the way you show up for your team during life’s toughest moments is your leadership legacy.

2. Careers Are Built on Relationships, Not Titles

At Coca-Cola, we built a business development team that got results—but what we remember most? The culture. The trust. The friendships. A decade later, we’re still connected.

“The company moves on. What sticks is how you made people feel,” Justin shared.

As you climb the ladder, don’t forget: relationships are currency. They outlast job titles and open unexpected doors.

3. Creative Thinking Is a Business Advantage

From customizing Coke bottles for Toys R Us to activating the Coca-Cola brand at the National Retail Federation, Justin constantly asked:

“What assets do we already have that can surprise and delight our partners?”

This kind of out-of-the-box thinking helped us turn transactional pitches into true strategic partnerships.

Looking to stand out in your corporate role? Start by bringing creativity and customer-centricity to the table.

4. Personal Branding Isn’t Optional Anymore

Justin started blogging and writing books over 15 years ago—not for the clout, but because he had something to say. Now he’s a frequent speaker, podcast host, and known voice in retail innovation.

Your personal brand isn’t just about visibility. It’s about clarity, connection, and credibility.

“When you’re interesting, others get interested,” Justin reminded us.

If you’ve been waiting for permission to share your ideas publicly—this is it.

5. Say “Yes” (But Be Smart About It)

Justin’s philosophy? Say yes often, especially early in your career—but stay aware of what drains your energy. Not every opportunity is a fit, even if it looks good on paper.

“Sometimes it’s a ‘no for now, not forever.’”

Learning to protect your time and invest it where your passions lie is a leadership skill most people don’t talk about—but it’s essential for long-term success.

6. Build a Personal Advisory Board (Not Just One Mentor)

Forget finding the perfect mentor. Instead, surround yourself with a diverse group of trusted advisors who can offer perspective across different aspects of your life and leadership.

Justin calls it his “personal board of directors”—and I couldn’t agree more.

7. Sustainable Joy Comes from Integration, Not Balance

When I asked Justin how he sustains joy as a high-impact leader, his answer was clear: movement, music, meaningful relationships.

He finds creativity in his workouts, joy in his songwriting, and fulfillment in time with his family. None of it is accidental—it’s all intentionally integrated.

“Joy isn’t something you chase. It’s how you show up.”

Final Thought: You Can Be Ambitious and Joyful

If you’re a driven leader who’s been feeling the weight of it all—burnout, disconnection, or wondering if success is supposed to feel like this—let this be your reminder:

πŸ‘‰ You don’t have to abandon your ambition to reclaim your joy.
πŸ‘‰ You can lead with excellence and emotion.
πŸ‘‰ You can have impact and integrity.

This conversation with Justin is proof. And it’s only the beginning.

πŸ’‘Journal Prompt:

“What part of me have I been leaving out of my leadership—and what might change if I brought it forward?”
